Grandmaster in the making: Mohammed Javeed making his moves on chess boards.

"PUDUCHERRY, Nov. 22, 2008:   A 12-year-old boy played simultaneous game of chess with 200 persons on Saturday as an attempt to create a record.

For Mohammed Javeed, a student of Class VII of Primrose School at Moolakulam, playing chess was almost a passion from the age of five. Learning the nuances of the game from then, he played a simultaneous game with 200 persons aged between five and 14 years for achieving a record. He won 189 games, tied for 6 and was defeated in five. The school has applied for the Limca Book of Records for the feat.

Javeed started winning tournaments after Shivakumar took over the responsibility as his coach ever since Shivakumar joined the school as the chess coach. According to  Shivakumar, Javeed always won games by sacrificing a piece, a move, aimed at luring the opponent. He has been polishing his skills through observation and practice which stretches upto even seven hours a day and this has paved the way for his "space advantage," Shivakumar said adding that Javeed can even play blindfold.

The boy had already won several competitions at the state-level under 14 category and his biggest dream was to win the grandmaster (GM) title in Kolkota in March next year, Shivakumar said.

"I like to play chess. I now want to participate in the Grandmaster title tournament which would be held at Kolkata in March 2009," said Javeed. The boy had also won prizes at State-level and zonal-level chess tournaments.
School Education Director S. Sundaravadivelu inaugurated the attempt. It was organised by the Rotary Club of Pondicherry Cosmos."
